Maria Montessori
Doctor, teacher, philosopher, feminist and anthropologist, Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952) is recognised as a visionary and leader in the field of early childhood education. Her progressive view of children was way beyond her time and her writings are still very relevant today. She was the first proponent of the theory that the first six years of a child's life were the most important.
Maria Montessori believed that 'all children could explode into learning'.
Her Montessori Method and teachings have inspired educators across the globe. There are more than 22,000 Montessori schools around the world and about 130 in New Zealand.
Montessori Aotearoa New Zealand has a useful Parent Guide to help you better understand Montessori education for 3-6 and answer common questions about Montessori.
